Chapter Twelve

Hannah:

Growing excitement flits through the village as the evening approaches. Apparently, a messenger has arrived to send word that the king and queen are riding down to whatever village we’re in—Solaya—one at the outskirts of their kingdom. A village that is the gatekeeper to their mountains where they normally live.

Before dinner, Vinshesa seeks me out and they change me into the green gown and paint my lips.

Excitement flares as people make bets on the time Brun’s parents will arrive. And as if it weren’t an even bigger coincidence, winds begin at about the same time the sun sets.

A cheer roars when horses approach and I’m not sure if they’re applauding because my timing was correct, but more than likely it’s because it’s their king and queen.

The horses enter the gates, and the largest orc jumps from his steed before it’s completely stopped. The others disband more slowly.

The orc king looks nothing like Brun…my husband.

Orcs are huge, various shades of green, tusks that range from large to small. Many wear their hair braided, silver clasps and beads adorning their dark tresses, but just as many wear theirs shorn. The one difference is with humans, we usually wear shorter hair for men, and women wear longer hair. With orcs, either sex has long or short hair. They’re vicious and scarred…except for the king. Except for Brun. Both have smooth, unlined, undecorated green skin and that’s probably the only thing they have in common.

The king strides toward us and I’m not unaware that Brun pushes me slightly behind him.

“Is this her?” the older male calls out.

“This is Lady Hannah Montierge.”

“Let me see if I understand this,” the king snarls, his wretched voice carrying over the crowd. “The humans have bartered a bride—but marked her skin before giving her to us?”

He knows about the brand. The way he spits out marked makes me cringe. Like it’s a horrible, shameful thing.

“We will never accept such an insult!” he roars, his meaty fist striking the palm of the other.

“She is already my mate,” Brun says calmly.

“Impossible! She will be returned! You will not defy me on this, Brun.”

Brun shakes his head. “If she is with child?”

I gasp at the obvious lie.

“You would condemn my line, my royal seed, to live among the very village that insulted us?”

“She can never be a queen!” Brachard says, standing straighter as if to show his full height. His legs are huge, thick thighs as large as my head. His massive chest looks the size of a mighty barrel. His clawed hands are long and deadly.

He’s terrifying.

But then a female orc walks out from behind him. She’s gorgeous, big, beautiful eyes, long lashes, delicate lips. High cheekbones and arched brows that give her an imperious look. A queen. She hardly looks a day older than my husband. This…this woman is where Brun gets his beauty.

“My grandchild will not live among the humans,” she says flatly.

“Aga,” Brachard thunders. “I have ruled.”

“No, you haven’t,” she says calmly. “I could hear the bellows all the way from where we dismounted the steeds.
